1. The page to start: The process to request an energy label for your home is set up in steps via the website energielabelvoorwoningen.nl of the Dutch government. The first thing to do as prime owner of the house is to logon with your DigiD in order to lead some basic data of your home. Usually these are the data of the temporary energy label that was set for each home in The Netherlands at the start of 2015. This was also sent via mail to all home owners in the Netherlands in January and February 2015. Click on the button “Direct mijn energielabel aanvragen” to start the request process:

2. Log in with DigiD: After pressing the button “Direct mijn energielabel aanvragen” on the start page the following login page will be presented to you as homeowner: You  Log on using your DigiD and password. This gives you access to the protected area for homeowners to do your final home energy request..

3. The welcome page after your logon: You will now see the welcome page with some date from the “kadaster” ( Land Registry) based on which the temporary energy label was determined. This energy is an estimate based on the property type, the construction period and the square meters of your house. You can check and supplement this data by continuing the application. At the end of the application process you will be presented with the final energy label for your home.

4. Click on the button ‘definitief energielabel vaststellen’ (determine the final energy label) to start the request process for the final energy label for your home. This takes place in 5 main steps :

Step 1: Check and adjust few basic details of your home.

Step 2: Complete specific data that is relevant for the energy label. Such as the glazing and insulation of your home. Some questions do not apply to modern homes because it is known that energy saving measures have already been applied from the construction on.

Step 3: you have to provide proof here for any of the energy saving measures reported in step 2.

Step 4: Your data and the evidence must be approved by a “erkend deskundige” (certified expert home energy label). Select an independent expert who will handle your request.

5. Check the details about your home: 

This page again shows the type of house, construction period and the square meters as they are provided by the Land Registry to determine the preliminary energy label. It is possible to correct any inaccurate information on this page.

6. From here on you specify the energetic characteristics of your home. Starting with the type of glass:

Here you specify the type of glass that is most often used in your home. You specify this for the glazing in the living spaces as well as the sleeping areas. Choices are single glazing, double glazing and HR (high efficiency) glass.

How to recognize the type of glass? Here you will find the instruction for this. You can also specify triple glass, which however happens in the last question on exceptional energy saving measures. The influence of glass on energy consumption is high and you also notice that if you ‘play’ with the choice between single, double and HR glass on the energy label application: the indicative energy label can move up or down by a complete letter when chaning the type of glass!

7. 2nd energetic characteristic concerns the insulation of the outer walls:

No input is required for homes built in 1992 to present . This is because modern houses are already super well insulated from the initial building. It is possible to indicate whether extremely good (after) insulation is placed for residences of all years. You cannot specify that in this question, but in the last question about exceptional measures.

8. The insulation of the roof is the 3rd energetic characteristic which is requested in the application of the final energy for your home:

For homes constructed up to 1991 you are asked whether there is roof insulation in place.

No input is required for homes delivered from 1992 as the roof insulation for these houses is already very good from the construction (and these facts are known and used based on the year of contruction of your home).

You can specify whether there is extremely good after insulation fitted for all properties regardless of the year of construction. You should specify this post-isolation in the last question on exceptional measures (not here in the question about insulation!).

9. The next question is about the floor insulation of the house:

This question does not apply to homes that have been completed since 1992. It is assured through legislation and regulation that the insulation of the floor for these houses were already very good from the works. Home owners of homes delivered up to 1991 are asked whether there has been (extra) insulattion applied to the floor. For all properties regardless of the year of construction you can indicate whether extra good after insulation of the floor is installed. You can specify this post-insulation in the last question on exceptional measures (not here in the question about floor insulation).

10. Heating the house, the different types of heaters for heating your home are:

– Individual boiler, installation year before 1998

11. Hot water: does your home have a separate hot water installation next to the (central) heating system?

12. Are you using solar energy for your home?

Does your house have a solar water heater? Or does your home have solar panels, and if so how many square feet?

The easiest way to prove that your house has a solar water heater or solar panels (and if so how many square meters of solar panels is through documents where this is specified such as the purchase brochure of your house, an architectural report, the original invoices of the solar system, …

If you do not have these papers, then you have to explore your house.

Recognizing a solar water heater: A solar water heater provides hot water. A solar water heater can be identified by a solar collector on the roof and a storage somewhere in the house, often in the attic. Very occasionally the solar collector and the storage tank are joined and there is no separate storage tank.

Recognizing solar panels. Solar panels are usually large, flat, dark-colored surfaces. Often they are on the roof and somewhere where the sun can shine well because then they deliver the most electricity:-)

You can calculate the number of square meters of solar panels yourself assuming an average surface of a solar panel:

* An average solar panel is 1.6 m2.
* Count the number of panels on the roof.
* Total area: area of one panel (1.6 m2) times number of panels.
* Fill this outcome.

13. Types of ventilation systems

– Real estate up to 1999: is mechanical air extraction present?
– Homes 2000 to present: is there a balanced ventilation system in place?

(2) Keeps you informed of the application status and will contact you if necessary.
(3) Registers the energy label in the official Dutch database. All experts that you can choose from are independent and deliver the energy label on behalf of the government.
